Immersive Experience Day: for performing arts

15 September 2026, 12:00-17:00

Immersive technology offers new ways to tell stories and engage audiences. At the same time, it also raises questions: what can you concretely do with it as a cultural organization? What does it require in terms of time, resources, and knowledge? During the Immersive Experience Day for performing arts with a collection, you will have the opportunity to experience the work of creators, gain insight into their process, and discover what this technology can mean for your audience and programming. Want to personally experience how VR, AR, and XR work in cultural practice? And have discussions with creators and peers about what is needed to take the first step? Then come to the Immersive Experience Day!

What can you expect?

You literally step into the world of immersive: creators present their work, and you experience it as a visitor. Not reading about the technology, not listening to someone else, but experiencing it yourself. This way, you not only get an idea of the technology but also of what it evokes and what it can trigger in an audience.

Many cultural organizations are curious about immersive technology but are unsure where to start. The afternoon combines experiencing immersive technology firsthand with a substantive program. A creator takes you through their work and process. An external speaker zooms in on broader developments in the field: what works, what does it require, and where are the opportunities for the cultural sector?

Afterward, you will engage in discussions with colleagues from the cultural sector on various topics: how can I start? What do I need for that? What does it cost, and what are useful tips? These questions are central during this afternoon meeting, which DEN and Innovation:LAB (opens in new tab) organize for cultural professionals who want to explore the immersive field.

September 15 for performing arts

We are also organizing an Immersive Experience Day for performing arts: theaters, stages, (pop)venues, festivals, and other forms of live experiences. This will take place on September 15.

The number of places is limited, so sign up quickly! A maximum of 2 participants per organization.

A first look at the program

During the Immersive Experience Day, you will experience two immersive productions that showcase how technology enables new forms of storytelling and experiencing.

One of these experiences is Before the Story Starts by Urland (opens in new tab). What happens before a story begins? In this immersive dive into the subconscious, the boundary between spectator and story slowly blurs. During the Immersive Experience Day, you get a preview of this new performance and experience for yourself how immersive technology can engage you in a story in a different way.

The second immersive experience will also be announced soon. Keep an eye on this page for more information about the full program.

This was the previous Immersive Experience Day

On May 19, the Immersive Experience Day took place for cultural organizations with a collection. Watch the video below for a glimpse.

Innovation:Lab is a research and development platform where art, technology, and science come together to stimulate artistic innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural renewal. Innovation:Lab is a partner of DEN.

In the fourth episode of the podcast Cultuurshift, Anic van Damme, Splinter Chabot, and expert in interactive game experiences Hayo Wagenaar discuss how audio, AI, and game principles encourage active participation instead of passive observation in the live-action game Lander23 by Punchdrunk.

They explore how theater, technology, and interactive storytelling come together and how a smart digital layer transforms audiences into engaged participants.
