What is an LLM?

A Large Language Model (LLM) is an AI model trained on vast amounts of text, enabling it to understand and generate human language. Popular tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot run on such models. Behind the convenience of these tools lie important choices: about energy consumption, copyright, and what happens to your data.

What will you learn in this workshop? 

Together, we address the questions that truly matter in the sector: how do LLMs score on sustainability, copyrights, and privacy? We compare variants that perform better or worse in these areas, share examples of applications in the cultural sector, and work on a case of your choice. You'll leave with an overview and your first personal assessment. 

Sustainability: what does AI cost in energy? 

AI is energy-intensive. Training large language models consumes a lot of energy and mostly takes place outside Europe, and even a single AI response uses electricity. There are more sustainable alternatives: the Dutch GreenPT, for example, runs on green energy within Europe. In the workshop, we explore how to weigh the environmental impact of your AI usage. 

Copyright: on whose work is a model trained? 

Many large language models are trained on copyrighted works, often without permission or compensation for the creators. In Europe, there is growing political will to change this and ensure creators are compensated. As a cultural organization or creator, it's important to know your rights and how to protect your work. In the workshop, we discuss what this means for your usage. 

Privacy: where does your data go? 

Mainstream AI tools often store data outside Europe and sometimes use user input to further train their models. European alternatives like Mistrals Le Chat or Proton Lumo keep data within Europe and do not train with your input. The choice depends on your AI policy, your ambitions regarding privacy and sustainability, and how important output quality is — as mainstream tools often still score higher in this regard. We compare these variants in the workshop. 

Hands-on with your own case 

You won't stay on the sidelines. In the practical part, you work on a self-chosen case from your own work, applying the theory immediately to something relevant to you. So bring your laptop. 

Who is this event for? 

This session is for cultural organizations from (the vicinity of) Gelderland province that want to take the next step with AI responsibly. The workshop focuses on the daily reality of institutions with some capacity and is less aimed at smaller volunteer associations or individual creators. 

Feel free to bring one or more colleagues: together, you build a future-proof organization.

Gelderland organizations share their experiences with AI

Paleis Het Loo is inventorying the questions surrounding AI application within the organization and trying to get AI policy on the agenda. They share their experiences and the issues and dilemmas around safe data usage, ethics, sustainability, and rights involved.

The Public Library Gelderland South is already a step ahead: it has its own innovation department where AI plays a significant role. They will also share their experiences and dilemmas with you.
