Sustainable digitalization as the norm

On September 28, the NCDD presented a renewed manifesto: ‘Sustainable digitalization as the norm’

With this, the National Coalition for Sustainable Digitalization calls on public and private organizations to structurally implement sustainable digitalization in practice.

The renewed Manifesto for Sustainable Digitalization 2027-2030 was handed over during the NCDD conference by Hannah Boute to Michiel Boots, Director-General of Economy and Digitalization at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

Sustainable digitalization is essential for a livable society, a future-proof economy, and strategic autonomy. The NCDD network, in which DEN actively participates, calls on organizations to make sustainable digitalization standard practice.

The urgency for sustainable digitalization is greater than ever. Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken a significant leap forward. Geopolitical tensions highlight our dependencies on digital infrastructure and the resources needed for it. The Netherlands and Europe must take control of their own digitalization. The twin transition as the key to sustainable national and European competitiveness.

The manifesto contains seven action lines. Organizations need better insight into the environmental impact of their digital activities, including energy, water, materials, emissions, and their supply chains. Sustainability must be integrated from the outset in the development and deployment of AI. Additionally, more visibility and control over digital dependencies, sustainable procurement, digitalization for demonstrable sustainability, and intensified collaboration within sectors and supply chains, in the Netherlands and Europe, are important. Smaller organizations, in particular, are needed to advance this transition.
