PrestoCentre Preservathon: AV Preservation Storage Solutions

Op 25 en 26 juni 2014 organiseert  PrestoCentre een conferentie over het digitale duurzaamheid van audiovisueel materiaal. De conferentie vindt plaats in Turijn, Italië, in het Rai Museo della Radio.

About Preservathons
PrestoCentre Preservathons are two-day hands-on events developed around main themes and challenges in audiovisual digitisation, preservation and long-term access. During the first day, attendees will work together in small groups. Activities include workshops, roleplaying, demonstrations, presentations, writing and negotiation exercises (e.g. call for tender, SLA). Each Preservathon includes a competitive element. The second day is organised as a mini-conference including concise presentations and demonstrations of the results and experiences from the first day, a ceremony to award the winning group, and a short but informative review on the subject, including the state of relevant technology, related research, and open questions.
AV Preservation Storage Solutions
Get it right the first time - Learn to select the best storage solution for your AV archive. Around 2000, there was a widespread assumption that digitisation would solve most media preservation problems by making perfect digital copies onto new carriers as the need arose. However, it has become clear that there is no such thing as ‘everlasting’ data storage. Digital preservation requires the indefinite, error free storage of information, together with the means for its retrieval and interpretation, irrespective of changes in technologies, support and data formats, or changes in the requirements of the user community. Any choice of storage solution, therefore, involves careful consideration, needs assessment, long-term cost evaluation and so on. Where and when do vendors get involved and what do you need to know about them and their products before you make your decision?
Storage technologies and storage management have become essential components of long-term digital preservation. Many storage vendors concentrate on the audiovisual space covering production, post, playout, distribution and archiving. These include disk based solutions as well as data tape solutions, and there are many providers (ISILON, BlueArc, Fujitsu, EMC, HP, IBM, Oracle, HP, Quantum, Spectra Logic et al). We have also begun to see cloud storage specifically for long-term preservation, e.g. from DuraCloud, Arkivum, ColdStorData and Autonomy. Cloud storage for audiovisual archiving is also emerging with Front Porch and its ‘archive as a service’ (Lynx). T3Media (Thought Equity Motion) is offering services to store and monetise archive content. All these include storage and management, all are audiovisual, all are preservation or preservation-related. The Preservathon does not favour any particular technology solutions, vendor or service provider. Instead, it will help you prepare to assess the solutions already available and the new developments on the horizon. It will also help technology providers to understand and harness the results of the Preservathon to better understand the questions and meet the needs of end users.
