Present Past: Second Life of Cultural Heritage (seminar 7)

Website UvA Zwaartepuntenonderzoek

“The seventh edition of the Present Past Seminar Series focuses on a new research project on information governance. Ever since the segregation of expert action and practice from public didacticism in museums and archives, which took place towards the end of the 19th Century, these cultural institutions have been governed by an ever incorporating Technocracy coupled with an extensive neo-liberal disenfranchisement – a Foucauldian Governmentality.

However, drawing on the increasingly subversive use of the term ‘governance’ in indigenous studies and medicine, the goal of this work is to generate a shift in the meaning and scope of ‘governmentality’, arguing for a new form of administration, care and engagement within cultural institutions that recognise and endorse extensive expertise, diversity of jurisdiction and hybrid social sovereignties. Such a shift will have fundamental implications on how cultural institutions administer their collections, engage with their constituencies and their representational obligations.”
